I am new to VPS and I collect some information about VPS security which want to share with your guys which might help you securing your system.
- Always prefer to choose long password which should include all kind of character like numbers, upper and lower characters, and it will be better if you use other special characters like #,$,$. Not only for for root you should also apply similar rules for others users too.
- Keep you server up to date to date with latest OS patches and versions. When ever you login first time to system. Also make update scheduler which will update your system continually. Also run your cron daily which will update your server.
- Remove and disable all the application and softwares which you don't need in your system, In this way you will have more memory available for programs, like if you don't need webmail server it is better to disable them instead of keep it up. I learn very much from my web design firm about this.
- Never give root password to anybody even who you trust if you are are running some kind of critical website. There are many incident some private people never return server back to you.
These are some checklist which I collected from other online sources. You can contact any professional administrator if don't know that much about VPS. Keep in mind web designing is much harder than this but there involve no risk but in VPS.
